LYNDWORTH WON BY 116 RUNS

The Saturday 1st XI continued their trend for dropping bowlers in place of a batsman for this penultimate league Saturday. The Saturday 1st XI went into their game with 10 specialist batsmen and a wicket keeper, leaving the two opening bowlers from earlier in the season to play in the 2nd XI. Lyndworth batted first and made nearly 250, largely thanks to an extrordinary innings from the Lyndworth opening batsmen, who gave 11 chances during his hundred; there were a variety of dropped catches ranging in difficulty. Josh Williams suffered most of the damage from his bowling; his 12 overs contained 58 runs and missed chances. Sam Walker and Shak Syed opened the bowling on a flat pitch that offered no assistance, and their final figures reflected that. Shak Syed returned for a second spell and was hit for two sixes; one of which went into the Astroturf nets at wide long on. Sean Brown bowled accurately but the team could not stem the flow of runs, primarily due to the number of chances missed. In reply opener Jeff Webb continued his poor season by edging a catch to slip on his sixth delivery. A 68 run partnership for the second wicket followed by Jon Clugston (36) and Paul Spinks (40), characterised by gentle singles and twos, and punctured by the odd boundary. They had taken the total to 70 for 1 before Clugston was given out lbw by the appointed league umpire, despite the suggestion that there may have been a faint inside edge. Spinks followed soon after when chopping a ball wide of off stump straight to backward point, who fumbled the ball but crucially held onto the catch. Both players were guilty of getting out when well set. Jattin Patel continued his long lack of form by scoring seven before being adjudged lbw to a straight delivery. Aaron Oliver was bowled for four runs from 18 deliveries to a superbly disguised quicker yorker from the Lyndworth captain. Matt Wright was caught for an admirably restrained three, leaving Kings Heath 111 for 6. Gregg Arrand was facing the captain and received a quick bouncer, of which Gregg rode the bounce and deflected the ball along the ground for four through backward point. The following ball was a quick yorker, identical to Aarons and delivered with no run up and crept through the defences of the batsman. Sam Walker strode to the crease, having spent the preceding 10 minutes ‘shadow batting’ in front of the pavilion in preparation for his innings. The first delivery Sam received was the same yorker and had the same devastating effect on the batsmans stumps. Sean Brown was caught at slip for 11 and Shak Syed was bowled for four, leaving the Lyndworth captain with six wickets and Josh Williams unbeaten on zero, not having faced a single delivery. Kings Heath were unable to find any longevity at the crease and were bowled out for 130 in only 35.3 overs, having lost their final nine wickets for only 60 runs.
