MATCH DRAWN

Under the watchful eye of Saturday first team captain Andy Lloyd, who had arrived to watch the second innings, Kings Heath started their chase of 164 badly collapsing to 18 for 6 and then 31 for 7, leaving little chance of chasing the total. Opener Matt Wright was pouched at short midwicket from the first ball of the innings; Rizwan faced 13 balls for only a single before guiding a catch to the wicketkeeper from his 14th. Jattin Patel played compactly, hitting two fours before poking a low catch to cover for 12. The middle order of Ben Jones, Adnan Ali and Shak Syed all made ducks, facing only 12 balls between them. First team keeper Ben spent a nervous four balls at the crease, before missing a straight ball and being dismissed lbw. Adnan was early through a drive on his second ball and offered the bowler a sharp return catch, whilst Shak tried to break the shackles and gave a catch to midwicket. Throughout this, number four Joe Hawkins had been resolutely surviving, having watched four wickets fall for only two runs at the other end. Bernard O’Connor, batting low down at number eight for such an eventuality, survived long enough to take the score to 31 before deflecting a catch to the keeper. Gregg Arrand came into the fray at number nine, and he and Hawkins spent just under 30 overs steadfastly refusing to concede their wicket, taking Kings Heath to the verge of safety, adding 45 runs in the process. However, the Pickwick opening bowler returned to bowl his ninth over but before the scorers could notify the fielding captain (maximum of eight overs per bowler) Gregg snicked a thin edge to the keeper and walked. Experienced losing draw specialist Kasim Abbas walked to the wicket with seven overs remaining with the sole instruction of not permitting number 11 Stuart Millard to bat (Stuart holds the record for the most 3rd team golden ducks). Despite Kasim playing a few wild hoicks across the line in the final over (the ball mercifully missing the stumps on each occasion), the draw was secured, denying Pickwick victory. The star of the innings was Joe Hawkins, who demonstrated great maturity finished unbeaten on 30 in a heroic innings full of self control and concentration. This followed controversy on the field during the Pickwick batting innings. The Pickwick captain opened the batting and soon hit a half volley from Shak to mid on, who took the catch. However the batsman refused to leave the crease, claiming a bump ball, much to the disdain of the Kings Heath fielders. The umpiring decisions continued in the same vein, lbws, run outs and catches behind refusing to be given. Throughout the innings the scoreboard was regularly several overs behind, and the total score jumping around, increasing and decreasing randomly - often by a large number of runs at a time. At one stage, Pickwick shouted and ran onto the field three balls into a new over, whereupon it transpired that Millard was three deliveries into his ninth over. Kings Heath were unimpressed and indicated the scoreboard, which was showing a total of 12 overs bowled for the entire innings. Play continued after much debate and at the tea interval closer inspection of the scorebook revealed some of the worst scoring (in a scorebook dating back to 1942) that has ever been seen at senior level club cricket. Earlier in the day, the first ball of the match (bowled by Millard) was glanced to Jattin, standing close in the wide first slip position, having been precisely positioned by the skipper, unfortunately the catch was spilled, but the cloud cover offered encouraging swing to that pace of bowling. All of the bowlers contributed and therefore there were raised eyebrows from the Kings Heath fielders when Bernard O’Connor was brought into the attack for the 35th over, when Pickwick were starting to accelerate their scoring, and particularly as Rizwan, Adnan and Hawkins all had overs remaining in their allocation. However Bernard bowling deceptively accurate medium pace, got the ball to move in the air just enough for two batters to be drawn out of their crease, only to be sharply stumped on both occasions by Ben Jones behind the wicket. Shak, Rizwan, Stuart and Bernard finished with two wickets apiece, with Adnan and Kasim collecting one each, only Joe Hawkins going wicketless as Pickwick were bowled out on the first ball of the 39th over on a very green pitch.
